Submariner Dial - Black Mother of Pearl (No Date)

Black mother of pearl is genuine nacre — the natural iridescent lining of a shell — taken from the dark, near-black end of the range rather than the familiar pale grade. It is a natural material, not a paint or a coating: the colour comes from the shell's own microscopic layered structure bending light, which is why the surface shifts through teal, sea green, violet and deep blue as the watch moves, then settles back to near-black at rest.

This dial is polished to a semi-gloss, which lets the iridescence carry without a mirror glare fighting it. Because the material is natural, the figuring on every dial is different — yours will not match the product photograph exactly, and no two are alike.

This is the second-generation Submariner dial — the Submariner II. The face has been redrawn: a full printed minute track now runs the outer edge, the hour markers are raised, bevelled and mirror-polished applied indices filled with Swiss Super-LumiNova® BGW9 A-Grade, and the logo and the Automatic script are applied — set onto the dial rather than printed onto it. The original Submariner dials remain on sale and are unchanged; the II is a new design, not a replacement.

Fitment is identical to the original: 28.5mm, four dial legs, and the same NH movement compatibility. If you are part-way through a build with an original Submariner dial, the II drops into the same case and takes the same hands.

No — and that's the point. This dial is unique to each piece, whether from a genuine natural material or an individually hand-finished process, so its pattern and colour vary from one example to the next and won't match the photo exactly. The photos are representative of the design, not the precise piece you'll receive.

Both. This dial pairs applied (raised) indices with printed markers — for instance, raised metal hour indices alongside a printed minute track or numerals. The applied indices give depth and light play; the printed elements keep the finer detailing crisp and flat.

Yes — the applied indices are filled with 100% Swiss Super-LumiNova® BGW9 Grade A: a cool blue glow by night, white by day, lasting up to eight hours on a full charge. For maximum glow, pair it with hands that also carry BGW9 so the whole face glows together (hands are sold separately).

This is a no-date dial, so a no-date caliber is cleanest — the NH38 (the NH70, NH71 and NH72 fit too). It also runs on a date caliber like the NH35 or NH36, and on the wider Seiko/TMI family (7S26, 7S36, 4R15, 4R35, 6R15, NE15, NH25, NH26); the date wheel just turns unseen behind the blank dial. In fact, many modders fit an NH35 or NH36 on purpose to future-proof the build — that way they can later swap to a date or day-date dial without changing the movement. One thing to expect if you do: the crown keeps its date-setting position, so you'll feel it click into that detent when you pull the crown partway out — but with no date window, nothing changes on the dial face.

Yes, almost certainly. This is a standard Seiko mod dial — 28.5mm in diameter and 0.4mm thick, the industry-standard size — so it fits most, if not all, Seiko cases. Where a dial is shown with a particular case, that's an aesthetic pairing, not a fitment requirement. If you're unsure, the surest check is to remove your current dial and measure it with a vernier caliper.

The dial ships with four legs so it fits two different crown positions. Seiko movements come in 3 o'clock and 4 o'clock crown layouts, and the dial feet sit in different places for each. Clip off the two legs that don't match your crown position — two stay, two go.

Both our normal and ultra thin chapter rings fit this dial. Where a dial has applied (raised) indices, they sit within the clearance of either ring — so the choice is purely about looks: the ultra thin chapter ring sits low and discreet, while the normal sits a little more pronounced. Pick whichever suits your style.

No — dials and hands are sold separately. This listing is for the dial only; choose a matching handset to complete the build. If your dial is lumed, pairing it with lumed hands in the same lume type keeps the whole face glowing together.

Yes, it's a limited edition, and it won't be restocked. Once the run sells out it's retired for good. The edition size is shown on the product page.

Our dials carry the logo on an adhesive backing rather than a stamped or engraved mark, so it isn't baked into the surface — but removing one cleanly isn't realistic. The adhesive doesn't release without scratching or marking the dial, and the risk is greatest on enamel. We sell our dials as-is and don't modify them. You're welcome to remove it yourself or have a modding specialist do it, just knowing the face will likely pick up some cosmetic marks.
