About Our Limited Edition Dials

The Great Wave off Kanagawa (神奈川沖浪裏, Kanagawa-oki nami ura) is an iconic woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai (葛飾北斎), circa 1829 to 1833 in the late Edo period. To date, this remains as Hokusai's most famous piece of work and has been one of the most recognisable works of Japanese Art in the world.

Given the rich history and origin of Hokusai and SEIKO, this is a perfectly paired appreciation of art and horology.

Our first introduction of The Great Wave off Kanagawa Dial was dated back in 4th December 2018. They were highly popular and was completely sold out within a month or so during pre-order stage. It been about 6 months since then. During this period, we spent tons of effort in research and development and we are ready to once again bring back The Great Wave off Kanagawa Dial in a brand new form!!

Introducing a novel approach to dial making - Pushing the limits of dial making technology. That is, the luminous pigment is layered beneath the artwork. This novel approach is invented by us and only we can do it. First of its kind and the only one of its kind in the watch industry.

Firstly, the base of the dial starts off with a white based coat. Secondly, 100% Swiss Super-LumiNova BGW9 is generously multilayered onto the white base dial. Thirdly, The Great Wave off Kanagawa artwork is industrially printed onto a special crystal clear film. This film even with printed artwork still allows adequate UV to charge the luminous pigment and also allows the luminous pigment light to fluorescence through. Next, the artwork film is bond onto the luminous pigment directly using proprietary adhesive. All these into a 0.5mm dial thickness. Lastly, applied indices are punched onto the dial. These tedious production stages are conducted in three different industrial production plants.

All of these efforts resulted in a unique and one of a kind dial in the world. A high definition clarity of The Great Wave off Kanagawa in the day and a luminous piece of artwork in the night. This dial has a semi-glossy and grainy 3D texture that highlights the beauty of The Great Wave off Kanagawa artwork in an unprecedented premium quality. Finished off with beveled mirror polished silver hour indices.

As this being our masterpiece, we are increasing the quantity. Nonetheless, it will still remain a limited edition run.

New favourite daily

I bought an old 7009 for repair and bought this great wave off Kanagawa dial to fit. Sadly the day wheel was too worn on the 7009 to change consistently, so I bought a new NH36 movement to replace it. The dial was delivered incredibly fast and fits beautifully on both the 7009 and NH36 and really sets off the watch. It glows gently throughout the night and honestly is better than I thought it was going to be in every way. The day wheel of the NH36 doesn’t quite fit with a 4 o’clock crown but it is a small price to pay for a delightful watch. Highly recommended.

Awesome Dial but I give it a touch higher than Awesome.

Fast delivery with a nice personal touch of handwritten from Adriel. The dial itself is an awesome art with great lume. I modified it by changing the Indices from the Seiko 5 SNKK17 to match. But in that process, I manage to spoil that 11 O'Clock lume. A very tedious process. After 4 hours and 10 sticks of cigarettes, I manage to finish it. Next round maybe I need to change it to Sapphire and the hand hour minute that I like.

Great finish. There's 4 legs on the rear, I had to cut 2 of them which is explained on the Tuto (on this web site). I do recommand to buy hands with no lume, at night it will make it easier to read the time. And probably would look better too, but well, it's looks fine anyway. The time shinny stripes are .... shinny. It's very classy .
