What is the Great Wave series?

The Great Wave series is our family of dials built on Hokusai's woodblock masterpiece, The Great Wave off Kanagawa — the first one released in December 2018, and the design we've returned to again and again since. It spans several finishes: glossy enamel, hand-painted, a luminous edition where the whole wave glows, and a hand oil-painted edition. Two editions are in production today; the earlier ones are retired and shown here for the record.

Which Great Wave dials have lume?

One edition glows, dramatically. The Luminous Great Wave layers Swiss Super-LumiNova BGW9 beneath the printed artwork, so the entire wave lights up at night — not just the markers. The Oil-Painted Great Wave is non-lume: its hand-painted oil surface is left uncoated to keep the texture, so it has no glow. Earlier editions vary — check the individual product page.

Which movement does a Great Wave dial need?

The two editions in production are no-date, time-only dials — the simplest fit. They take any standard NH-type movement, including the NH35 and NH36, along with the earlier 7S, 4R, 6R and NE-series Seiko calibres the dial line supports. There's no date-window or GMT version in production, so there's no date-wheel alignment or wider centre-hole to worry about. Earlier date and day-date editions are listed on their own product pages.

Will this dial fit my case?

Yes, almost certainly. This is a standard Seiko mod dial — 28.5mm in diameter and 0.4mm thick, the industry-standard size — so it fits most, if not all, Seiko cases. Where a dial is shown with a particular case, that's an aesthetic pairing, not a fitment requirement. If you're unsure, the surest check is to remove your current dial and measure it with a vernier caliper.

Is this a limited edition / will it be restocked?

Yes, it's a limited edition, and it won't be restocked. Once the run sells out it's retired for good. The edition size is shown on the product page.

The Great Wave off Kanagawa

Original Woodblock Print — The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai

In December 2018, Lucius Atelier released the first Great Wave off Kanagawa dial made for Seiko mods. Katsushika Hokusai's woodblock masterpiece (神奈川沖浪裏, c.1831) paired with Seiko's mechanical heart — a meeting of art and horology that struck a chord immediately, and the first run sold out within weeks.

That first dial became a series, and we kept pushing it further than it had gone before. Today two editions remain in production; the rest are archive dials and completed builds, gathered here in full.

Every Great Wave, one fit

Every Great Wave dial is a standard 28.5mm fit, made to Swiss production quality under ISO 9001 certification — the same size shared across the Lucius Atelier line, so it drops into any build sized for it. The editions in production are no-date, time-only dials; pair them with any NH-type movement.
