Compatibility Breakdown of Seiko 5 GMT Series & NH34 Movement

What SKX007 parts fit the Seiko 5 GMT case, whether the NH34 drops into a standard build, and the clean way to build a GMT mod today.

When Seiko launched the Seiko 5 Sports GMT line — the SSK001, SSK003 and SSK005 — and quietly released the NH34, its first affordable automatic GMT movement, modders asked two questions at once: can I mod the new GMT watch with the SKX007 parts already in my drawer, and can I drop the NH34 caliber into a case I already own? We took an SSK001 apart to answer both.

The short version: the Seiko 5 GMT case is almost a platform of its own — very little crosses over from the SKX007 — and the NH34 fits the standard NH footprint on diameter but fights thin crystals on height. Below is the part-by-part breakdown, the clearance maths that actually decides a build, and — now that Lucius Atelier makes cases, dials and hands engineered for the NH34 — the clean way to build a GMT mod without the guesswork.

Can SKX007 Parts Mod the Seiko 5 GMT?

Quick Answer: Mostly no. The SSK GMT case is a separate platform — its bezel, bezel insert, chapter ring, crown and caseback are all unique and will not interchange with SKX007 parts. Only two things carry over: the 31.5mm crystal and the hand set (a GMT build adds a fourth 24-hour hand). If you want to mod an SSK, treat it as its own donor watch, not as an SKX.

The GMT case looks like an SKX descendant, but under the bezel it is a different animal. Here is where each part lands.

Bezel and Bezel Insert

The SSK bezel is bi-directional and turns without clicks — its underside is smooth, with no teeth and no click spring. An SKX007 bezel, built around a click spring and a toothed underside, has nothing to grip. The inserts differ too: SSK inserts are 0.3mm wider in diameter, so an SKX007 insert sits loose in an SSK bezel, and an SSK insert will not drop into an SKX007 bezel at all. If you want that click-free GMT feel on an SKX007, you can have it for free — install the bezel without its click spring.

Case, Chapter Ring and Crown

Because the bezel changed, the case lost the crevices and holes that once seated a click spring — so no SKX007 bezel will sit on it. The chapter ring grew too: the SSK ring is 32mm wide and 2.8mm tall against the SKX007's 30.5mm and 2.3mm, and it now carries the crystal gasket, which makes it mandatory rather than optional. Two round locating pins at 12 and 6 o'clock — the SKX007 has a single semicircular pin at 12 — mean the two rings will not swap. The crown, like the SRPD and SRPE generation before it, is no longer screw-down.

Crystal and Hands — the Two That Fit

The good news is short. The crystal diameter is unchanged at 31.5mm, so a sapphire upgrade drops straight in. And because Seiko keeps its hand-fitting dimensions common across its 7S, 4R and NH calibers, the hour, minute and second hands that fit an SKX build fit the GMT caliber too — you only add a dedicated 24-hour hand for the GMT complication.

The NH34's Standard Footprint

Quick Answer: The NH34 shares the NH family's 29.36mm casing diameter and mounting, so any case built for an NH35, NH36 or NH38 accepts it on diameter. Height is the catch — installed, the NH34 stands 7.99mm tall against 7.59mm for the three-hand calibers. That 0.4mm is the 24-hour GMT pinion stack, and it is the entire compatibility question.

Start with the reassuring part. The NH34 is dimensionally a member of the NH family — the movement uses the same 29.36mm casing diameter (with the dial holding spacer fitted) and the same mount as the NH35, NH36 and NH38. On diameter, a case that takes one takes them all.

The difference is vertical. The NH34 drives a fourth hand — the 24-hour GMT hand — which adds a pinion to the stack sitting above the dial. Measured installed, the way that matters for case engineering, the NH34 stands 7.99mm tall; the NH35, NH36 and NH38 stand 7.59mm. The 0.4mm gap is small on paper and decisive in metal.

Why 0.4mm Decides the Build

Case makers cut their crystals to sit close over a 7.59mm three-hand movement. Add 0.4mm of GMT stack and the second hand rises with it — in a slim case, close enough to brush a flat crystal, which slows or stops the beat. The fix is a double-dome sapphire: the dome lifts the glass away from the hand's sweep and buys back the clearance.

Even domed, the margin is real. We modelled our GS 36mm case with a double-dome crystal, an NH34, and a 12.5mm second hand: the hand clears the glass by 0.27mm — under a third of a millimetre, invisible to the eye and unforgiving to install. Second-hand length is the variable that tips it.

So can you force an NH34 into a case built for a three-hand NH movement? With a double-dome crystal and a short second hand, sometimes — but it is a precision job that rewards a proper hand-setting tool and a loupe, and it fails about as often as it works. A case engineered for the NH34 removes the gamble.

The NH34 Needs a GMT Dial

One more part does not carry over: the dial. The NH34's wider pinion stack has to pass through the dial's centre hole, and a standard three-hand dial's hole is too small. Seiko's own figures make the point — a standard dial centre hole runs about 2.1mm, a GMT dial about 2.9mm. Lucius Atelier's NH34 GMT dials are made with a 2.7mm centre hole for exactly this reason; a standard NH35 dial will not sit on an NH34.

Hands are the easy part, as the teardown showed: the hour, minute and second hands are common across the NH family, so any NH-compatible set fits. A GMT build simply adds a matching 24-hour hand on its own pinion.

The Easy Way to Build a GMT Mod
